How Positive Psychological Capital Can Combat Brain Drain

September 17, 2026 | 3:00-5:00 PM | UNK Regional Engagement Center

Central Nebraska Trailblazers

This interactive event will create meaningful connections between students and business leaders, exploring how understanding "Positive Psychological Capital" can transform careers and organizations while addressing our state's pressing brain drain challenge.

Keynote Dr. Kyle Luthans' interactive presentation will discuss ways to bring out and develop the “HERO” within.

HERO is an acronym for:

  • Hope – The will and way to reach your goals

  • Efficacy – Confidence

  • Resiliency – Bouncing back and beyond

  • Optimism – Positive explanatory style and expectations

When combined, these psychological strengths form one’s Positive Psychological Capital, or PsyCap for short. Psychological capital is a strength-based approach.

Prior research has demonstrated that higher levels of PsyCap are consistently related to positive outcomes in the workplace (i.e., rated performance, organizational commitment, entrepreneurial success). Research has also shown that managers or leaders with elevated levels of PsyCap not only have the ability to bounce back after challenging times themselves, but they also can create a contagion effect that can spread positivity throughout an organization.

An overview of PsyCap and a hands-on activity for boosting these psychological resources will be the focus of Dr. Luthans' presentation.
