Foundry Impact: How Ignite Lincoln 17 Turned Collaboration into Community
Ignite Lincoln 17 was more than just a few speakers on a stage, it put local nonprofits and leaders in conversation with each other. The event, led by The Foundry in collaboration with the Firespring Foundation and E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues, brought together speakers from all walks of life to share meaningful insights on this year’s theme of Belonging. The result was a single room where Lincoln's full range of voices were not just present, but genuinely heard, all while supporting the community’s mission-driven work. Little did we know our impact would reach the classroom.
Igniting Community Conversation
Nonprofits shared a space with businesses. Professionals sat alongside students. Local leaders and first-time speakers faced the same clock and the same audience. That shared constraint stripped away the usual barriers of title and tenure and replaced them with something more valuable, mutual curiosity.
Collaboration at Ignite Lincoln didn't just happen on the stage, it happened because of it. When a longtime community organizer and a college sophomore both speak honestly about what they care about, the audience is left with new connections they wouldn't have made anywhere else.
A Lasting Impact
Nebraska Wesleyan Business Communications student Gracie Ensrud wrote about Ignite Lincoln for an assignment in Dr. Randy Bretz’s course, saying
“There was an atmosphere of encouragement and curiosity. People were not only listening but actively engaging. Many were laughing, reacting, and later networking with one another. It demonstrated how powerful it can be when a community gathers to share ideas and support innovation. The event highlighted the importance of local involvement and showed that meaningful inspiration does not always come from national stages and that it can begin right here in Lincoln.”
That's Ignite Lincoln’s quiet power. It doesn't program collaboration, it creates the conditions for it. By gathering Lincoln's nonprofits, professionals, educators, and changemakers under one roof, Ignite 17 turned an evening of presentations into an engine for community.
